Medjool Date & Sea Salt Chews
A two-ingredient pocket fuel made from whole Medjool dates and flaky sea salt. Each pair of chews delivers around 36g of natural sugars — right in the 30-60g per hour fueling window for runs over 60 minutes. Unlike commercial gels, dates have a low glycemic index (around 42-55) due to their natural fiber content, meaning they provide a steadier, more sustained energy release rather than a sharp spike. This makes them well-suited to longer efforts where consistent fueling matters more than instant delivery. No gels, no ingredient lists you can't pronounce, no single-use plastic. Make a batch on Saturday and you're fueled for the whole training week.

Medjool dates are the ideal real-food fuel for runs over 60 minutes - their natural sugars digest quickly without causing GI issues. Make a batch at the start of the week and keep them in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. Wrap each chew individually in parchment or beeswax wrap so they are easy to pull out of your pocket mid-run without sticky hands. For longer efforts, pair with a sip of water or electrolyte drink to aid absorption. If you find dates too sweet on their own, a slightly larger pinch of salt balances the flavour nicely. Medjool dates are widely available at most grocery stores and bulk food shops.
Remove pits from dates. If they feel dry, soak in warm water for 5 minutes and pat dry.
Pinch a small amount of flaky sea salt into the cavity of each date where the pit was.
Press the date closed and roll firmly between your palms into a compact chew. Add a drop of coconut oil if the dates are sticking to your hands.
Finish with a light sprinkle of flaky sea salt on top of each chew.
Wrap individually in small pieces of parchment paper or beeswax wrap for easy pocket access during your run. Store in the fridge up to 2 weeks.
